Divisional Overview
The Division of Hematology and Oncology provides a full range of clinical services to children and adolescents with blood disorders and cancer. The Division draws patients both from metropolitan Saint Louis and a referral area extending throughout Missouri and southern Illinois. The Division is committed to advancing the care of children with these diseases through extensive involvement with clinical research programs as well as collaboration with basic science research projects. In addition, extensive undergraduate and graduate medical education activities are considered an essential component of the Division’s mission to improve the care of children. Clinical Services Outpatient services are provided within the Bob Costas Center of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and include consultations for new patients, ongoing clinical care for patients requiring chronic subspecialty services, chemotherapy infusions, and blood component transfusions. The Division has an extensive program for the treatment of patients with Sickle Cell Anemia, including an outreach program in southern Illinois. In addition, there is a special multi-disciplinary clinic for children with tumor of the central nervous system, as well as a dedicated program to provide comprehensive long-term follow-up care for survivors of childhood cancer. An integral part of the Division is the John D. Bouhasin, M.D. Center for Children with Bleeding Disorders, the only federally funded pediatric Hemophilia Treatment Center in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Inpatient services are also provided within Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and include a four-patient Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation unit. This unit is one of only two regional pediatric bone marrow transplant centers and is an active participant of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium. The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Program contributes data to both the National Marrow Donor Program and the Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research. St. Louis Cord Blood Bank
The Division collaborates closely with the Saint Louis Cord Blood Bank, which collaborates with maternity services throughout the region to collect, process, and preserve cord blood-derived stem cells for allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Cord blood units are distributed from the Bank to transplant programs throughout the world. The Cord Blood Bank is the second largest within the United States and serves as a model for similar banks throughout the country. Research
The Division is an active member of the Children’s Oncology Group, a National Cancer Institute-sponsored cooperative group that includes over 200 pediatric hospitals throughout the United States and Canada, as well as member centers in Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland. The Division currently has over 30 active biologic and therapeutic protocols for children with cancer; long-term survival data is also being collected on patients enrolled on an additional 24 studies. Individuals from Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital multiple administrative and scientific committees within COG, including those involved with designing and conducting individual clinical trials. The Division also participates in numerous other research projects involving sickle cell anemia, stem cell transplantation, hemostasis, pain control, and supportive care, and the section of Hemostasis & Thrombosis.
