Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship


This fellowship program is designed to train pediatricians and individuals trained in emergency medicine to be uniquely qualified to provide care and leadership in pediatric emergency medicine. As a fellow, you will provide direct and supervisory care on critically ill patients, grow as an educator in pediatric emergency medicine and develop confidence in conducting research in an academic setting

The fellowship spans three years for those trained in pediatrics and two years for those trained in emergency medicine. The program is flexible and will be tailored to the needs of the individual.

 

  • The curriculum provides: a minimum of 8 to 15 months of direct patient care and supervision in a busy urban emergency department. There are more than 34,000 visits to the Emergency Department at Cardinal Glennon Children Hospital each year, allowing the fellow an excellent opportunity for clinical experience.
  • 10 months of elective time, including subspecialty rotations in pediatric orthopedics, radiology, anesthesia, toxicology, intensive care and 3 months spent at an adult emergency medicine/trauma center.
  • formal courses and seminars in statistics, epidemiology, research design and medical ethics.
  • time to pursuit optional course work leading to a MPH degree at Saint Louis University School of Public Health.
  • an active and ongoing research focus leading to confidence as a researcher in an academic setting.
  • development of administration skills necessary for running a pediatric emergency medicine department.

PREREQUISITES
Successful completion of an accredited pediatric or emergency medicine residency. STIPENDS Initially commensurate with a PL-4 level of training. SELECTION PROCESS Selection is made through an interview process and the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Application deadline is usually by September 30th each year with interviews usually beginning by late summer. Match deadline is October 30th of each year. Board certification in Pediatric Emergency Medicine is available through both the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

CARDINAL GLENNON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
Cardinal Glennon Is the primary site for training for the fellowship and is a major pediatric teaching program of Saint Louis University School of Medicine. It is located across the street from the medical school campus and library. The hospital is a free standing 190 bed, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, with ground and helicopter transport services for both pediatric patients and neonates. It also houses the Regional Poison Center which serves Missouri as well as portions of Kansas and Illinois.
