MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Thank you for your interest in our Pediatric Residency Program. In addition to offering 13 Categorical Pediatrics positions each year, we also offer one Pediatrics-Child Neurology position and Saint Louis University offers four Internal Medicine-Pediatrics positions.

We are very proud of our long-standing history of training excellent pediatricians. Our Pediatric Residency Program at Saint Louis University School of Medicine began in 1933, when residents began receiving clinical training at St. Mary’s Hospital. In 1956, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center was opened and became the primary site of the University’s pediatric residency. Since that time, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center has continuously offered exceptional clinical and educational experience to housestaff and medical students as a fully accredited program credentialed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Since the inception of our program, hundreds of young men and women have successfully completed their training in pediatrics. Our graduates are found in the St. Louis area, all over the United States and throughout the world, in primary and subspecialty pediatric practices from academic to private practice to community health-centers and international practice. In the area of primary care, our graduates contribute to maintaining good health care for the pediatric population, actively participate in and organize programs to improve the safety and health care accessibility for all children. Our residents routinely match in their first choice sub-specialty fellowship programs and go on to contribute significantly to the subspecialty care of children. Pediatricians who received their residency training at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center represent every major pediatric subspecialty in the United States with many of our graduates receiving prestigious awards for their contributions to pediatric research.

Our program prides itself on providing the best educational and clinical experiences to meet the ever-growing, changing and complex needs of children and those who care for them. We recognize that when you are choosing a residency program you may not be ready to decide on a particular subspecialty or a subspecialty versus primary care. Saint Louis University’s Pediatric training program will provide a wide range of experiences and exposures to fully prepare you to excel in pediatrics no matter what your career goals are or what they become over the course of your three year residency.

As Program Director, my primary goal is to offer the best curriculum to prepare residents for continuing their careers in either general or subspecialty areas of pediatrics. We recognize that the assignment of the responsibility for the initial patient assessment, plan development and management to the trainees is the cornerstone of good clinical education and experience. This concept is central to all rotations at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Core didactic sessions, formal and informal conferences, bedside/classroom teaching, faculty/paramedical support and program flexibility allows our residents to tailor the experience to meet their individual career goals. We routinely re-evaluate our program and make continually make changes to improve the educational experience for our residents. If you have any further questions or would like more information about the Saint Louis University Pediatrics Residency Program please contact us.

Finally, I look forward to meeting with you in person to show off the Pediatric Residency Program at Saint Louis University/SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and our facilities. We do require an interview and visit from all resident candidates in order to get to know you as an individual. The interview will allow you to further expand and enhance your information about our institution and training program. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at (314) 577-5634 if you have any questions.
