‘Superman’ Director and Saint Louis University Alum James Gunn to Deliver 2026 Commencement Address

The visionary writer and film director has credited his time at SLU as foundational to his creative development. During the May 16 ceremony, Gunn will join three other SLU alums — trustee emeritus J. President Edward Feser, Ph.D., School of Medicine Dean Christine Jacobs, M.D., and Chaifetz School of Business Dean Jackson Nickerson, Ph.D., were named to St. Louis Magazine’s St. Louis Business 500, a guide to some of the St. Louis metropolitan area's most influential, impactful, and innovative leaders. Brooks Goedeker, executive director of the Midtown Redevelopment Corporation — a partnership of SSM and SLU — was also included on the list.
The SLU Tuition Promise initiative was covered by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, KMOX Radio, St. Louis Public Radio, St. Louis Business Journal, St. Louis Magazine, KMOV-TV, KSDK-TV, KTVI-TV, St. Louis American, St. Louis Review, Spectrum News and Ladue News.
Whitney Linsenmeyer, Ph.D., assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics, was interviewed by the New York Times for an article about popular supplements doctors actually recommend. She also was quoted in a SELF story about soluble and insoluble fibers.

In a dominant performance, the SLU women's chess team went a perfect 3-0 on March 22 to capture the first-ever women's U.S. Chess Federation's President's Cup title. The historic win follows the women's team taking the top all-female team title at the 2026 Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship in January.

SLU Professor Receives Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Award

Stephen Ferris, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology, was one of eight recipients this year. The award provides support for the next generation of creative thinkers with “high-risk/high-reward” ideas that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer.

Professor Receives 2026 National Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award

Verna Hendricks-Ferguson, Ph.D., RN, the Irene-Riddle Endowed Chair in Nursing Research, has spent her research career focused on palliative/end-of-life care. The National Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association award is the latest honor she has received for her research efforts.

Prison Education Program Students Graduate With Associate of Arts Degrees

The program fosters a learning community that highlights, in a unique way, the potential of a Jesuit approach to education. Howard University Professor Stanley Andrisse, Ph.D. (A&S Grad '14), delivered the commencement address during a ceremony held on March 23 at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre, Missouri.

Research Conference

2026 Geo-Resolution Conference to Focus on Securing Future with Geospatial

Co-hosted by Saint Louis University and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), the conference will highlight how, in an era of persistent strategic competition, mastering the geospatial domain is a national imperative. The conference will be held at SLU's Busch Student Center on Thursday, Sept. 10.
